I initially wasn’t looking forward to this episode – I knew it was partly going to be a parody of ’2012′, and was concerned that it was going to end up the way of last season’s terrible two-part ‘Pandemic’. Thankfully, ‘Pee’ ends up far better than that effort; part of this is because – unlike ‘Pandemic’, which very much relies on seeing ‘Cloverfield’ to get the majority of the jokes – ‘Pee’ is presented as a broader story, which all viewers, including those who haven’t seen ’2012′ yet (myself included) can enjoy.
The plot is a good one, and feels like vintage ‘South Park’, and (’2012′ comparisons aside) could just as easily come from one of the earlier seasons.
The topic of people peeing in swimming pools had actually been done as a sub-plot way back in the second season’s ‘Summer Sucks’, although in that case it was infants, and I think it was long enough ago to re-visit the subject.
I like Cartman’s annoyance at all the immigrants, although I do feel that – while containing some very good moments – lacks a resolution; it feels like it needs to be wrapped up better.
And being ‘South Park’, Parker and Stone feel the need to add something controversial – peeing on monkeys and then shooting them when they become outraged.
One of my slight disappointments of this half of season thirteen is the lack of Randy, one of my favourite characters. Thankfully, in this story, we finally get some semi-decent Randy moments, although I felt there was scope for more.
On the whole, I really enjoyed this episode. It is a well-rounded and well-executed story, and rounds off a reasonable season. Roll on season fourteen!
