South Park
The History Of South Park
South Park is an American comedy sitcom that can be found on the network, the Comedy Channel. In preparation of South Park, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who met while in University, developed a sequence of animated shorts, which set the foundation for South Park itself. While South Park grew popular very quickly, no one could have expected South Park to fit into the same category of “100 Greatest Cartoons” along with “Tom and Jerry” and “The Simpsons.” South Park has also received other media awards, which includes four Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award for Comedy Central. It is still the longest running show on Comedy Central.
While South Park has taken a lot of popularity for itself, it has also taking some criticism for its mature nature. The show has gained some popularity and flack for becoming the first showing rated TV-MA, for mature audiences. South Park is certainly not for children, unless parents are watching as well, some episodes have a lot of adult humor within them. The show deals in surreal acts, satirical acts, dark humor and crude language and it is one show that has become very popular by killing the same guy over and over again. If you’ve ever heard “Oh my god…they killed Kenny!” you have already heard about South Park.
The story of South Park revolves around four boys- Kenny McCormick, Eric Cartman, Kyle Broflovski and Stan Marsh and their extreme and strange adventures in the Colorado town of South Park.
The shows are typically written and produced a week before they are aired and many shows deal in world affairs such as what is happening in the local news and things of that nature. A majority of the shows are written, directed and acted by Parker and Stone. Originally, the characters of South Park were made from cutout animation but through the years became computer software simulated. While Stone and Parker were both a huge part of the show’s success, after a few seasons, Parker became the only credited writer and director of South Park. Today, 209 episodes have aired in fourteen season and another 14 are already contacted.
Throughout the shows longing running, many celebrities have opted and agreed to play a character.
